Red wine contains essential antioxidants like quercetin, polyphenols, and resveratrol.


Quercetin is an important flavonoid found in red wine that promotes positive heart health by moderating blood pressure, reduce inflammation and prevent oxidative stress. Quercetin combats free radicals like eye related disorders, cognition impairment, allergies, chronic fatigue or diabetes.


Polyphenols, also known as phenolics, are phytochemicals or micronutrient, have an abundance of antioxidant activity. Polyphenols play a role of a probiotic. This micronutrient is responsible for increasing good bacteria in your gut. This can help with weight management and disease prevention.

According to Wide Open Eats, the tannis evident in red wine contains procyanidins, a phenol that counteracts free radicals, are effective in reducing cardiovascular disease. Procyanidins are found in red wine. This phenol promotes a healthy heart and lowering cholesterol.


Antioxidants found in red wine can slow down the progression of atherosclerosis. Atherosclerosis occurs when there is a buildup of fats, cholesterol and plaque along the artery walls. According to the International Journal of Molecule Medicine, a study showed with moderate red wine intake could reduce atherosclerosis.


Resveratrol decreases bad cholesterol, also known as LDL, while increasing good cholesterol. A study done at Curtis University in Australia found regular consumption of red wine reducing LDL cholesterol levels in postmenopausal women by eight percent and increased HDL cholesterol by 17 percent.

Moderate consumption can prevent the risk of stroke by minimizing blood clotting. Resveratrol in red wine acts as a blood thinner similar to aspirin.
